other places

I'm also using my convalescence to try to organize several years' worth of photos, and hope to update my flickr account soon. I have every intention of buying a digital SLR with some of next summer's grant money, if I can get away with it.

(Respectively: the facade of the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris, the banks of the Isis in winter, the courtyard of the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus, and a young spectator at the Taungbyon nat pwe, the largest annual spirit festival in Burma.)

Such lovely photos!

I want to visit Damascus very, very much.

Your statement about the SLR made me laugh - I was talking to a friend about what I had in mind as my research topic for grad school apps and he was like "This is just a ploy to get people to fund your travels in Turkey!! You should get a camera if you get the money, while you're at it!"

your friend is a wise man, indeed.

(And come back to Istanbul next summer, and we'll take the Haş bus down to Antakya and cross the border and arrive in Damascus during blackberry-juice season...)
