emergency (this dark room)
During brunch today with another Elizabeth (life is full of them right now) the phone rang, dear S. calling. I got back to her an hour later when I got home. She answered and said, "it's just that I am so worried about what's happening in Pakistan, and had to call someone," and in two keystrokes I brought up the NYT homepage, and swore. I'm not really writing about political matters outside of work right now, because I'm so depressed by pretty much everything--the stormclouds are gathering in Turkey, too, and the fragmentary stories from Burma give little hope. Now this also.
CM is providing bleak and effective commentary, and both Manan and Barney Rubin (who's in Islamabad now) are also writing at the ICGA blog. All I can say is variations on fuck this bullshit.
A recent acquaintance says it all more effectively. Let his words stand instead.
