music despite everything

Sashi's just posted a poem that I've loved for years, from a book we were discussing earlier this evening. Perhaps my favorite line in it is this one: "To make injustice the only measure of our attention is to praise the Devil."

I've been Devil-worshipping a great deal recently, both here and elsewhere. (It's hard to help myself; paying attention to injustice is part of my job.) There's one more injustice I need to yell about--the so-called "controversy" over the Khalil Gibran International Academy--but after that, it will be time to write of innovative book design and nerdy progressive Seattle hip-hop, a neighborhood doppelganger and a recent coincidence with roots in nineteenth-century Delhi, some funny things about Turkish grammar, and food you should be eating if you aren't already. I promise.

I've never been subtle enough to understand the differences between joy, pleasure, and delight. Perhaps you or Mr. Gilbert could explain it to me.

Abeer, welcome! It's always a pleasure to get a visit from someone whose work I admire.

I don't presume to speak for Mr Gilbert, but how I love this preposterous capacity of language, so many more ways to say something than anyone would think to need. I don't know (or care, much) what the dictionary says, but each word feels a little different to me: pleasure is bodily, quotidian; delight a fizzy feeling; and joy similar, but with an almost holy tinge--that's probably the fallout of childhood hymns.

Sz dear: It may take some time, but I promise to answer. And oh, I'm reading Other Colors as well.
