(hurrah!)

I was sitting with friends in a kosher Uzbek restaurant in Queens on Wednesday evening, wondering how similar Uzbek manty and Turkish mantı would turn out to be, when the call came--

"Kian is free
".

No unrestrained jubilation yet; because the story's not over--the charges against him remain, and he is not allowed to leave the country. But we are all relieved, and so happy. Thank you again so much to all of you who signed the petition.

Ali Shakeri, the fourth Iranian-American detainee, remains in Evin Prison. After the fourth month of his detention passed, his family decided to break their silence about the case and launch a campaign. You can go to the Free Ali Shakeri website her to see what you can to do help; there's also a petition online here. I hope his release will soon follow.

UPDATE: Ali Shakeri has been release on bail and is with relatives in Tehran.

Great news! I would love to know where that Uzbek restaurant is. I've only had Uzbek food once before - at a place called "Uzbekistan" in Los Angeles. It would be nice to try it again in NY.
