ganesh: actually, I ate all the samples on the little wheat thins, and then recalled that my grandmother has an excellent pepper jelly recipe, and resolved to make my own. except my kitchen seems to be roughly 150 degrees right now.
did you know that the pepper jely people have an online shop?

oh, and remember mama lil's pickled hungarian goathorn peppers, though? at pike place and all the farmer's markets, in the little many-sided jars...got some of them, and tayberry and marionberry jams, and chocolate-covered caramels with smoked sea salt from fran's, and salmon. Oh lord: Seattle food.
ya sameeny, one of these days we must get you out (north)westwards.
peter: oh, it's far-fetched even to me now, the thought that I grew up amidst all that. I miss all the water, and the mountains. Someday I'll go back and try to climb that one; several of my relatives have done so, and it's one family tradition I'd be willing to embrace.
sz: yes, the new camera. bought in anticipation of delhi and bangalore (or at least, another istanbul) but proving entertaining even on these norteamericano shores.
ya anand: i took so many pictures of seagulls. i'll trade you for ruins.

these are lovely, elizabeth.

The closest I get to seeing anything like the scene in the bottom photo is in a Frank Church painting hanging in the basement of the National Gallery.
It seems so far-fetched. Our mountains are blue and sort of level out here.
