march on sunday
I am about to go out and commence drinking on honor of the saint who chased the snakes away from one of my ancestral homelands, but first wanted to remind fellow locals that tomorrow there is a public gathering and march in Manhattan to call for an end to the war in Iraq (thanks to Brooklyn Masala for the reminder).
The march--organized by United for Peace and Justice--will start assembling around 1:00pm on 6th Avenue between 35th and 39th, and will start moving at 2:00pm, headed uptown and eastwards (for a change). See the UFPJ site for more info. In the aftermath of a similar march last spring, I wrote a bit (with reference to an Amitav Ghosh essay) about why I think it's worthwhile to participate in public demonstrations. The intervening year has mostly been a bitter and discouraging one, politically, but still believe what I wrote then to be true. So I'll be there, tomorrow, and I hope some of you will be, too.
