against section 377
I am delighted to see this: an open letter from a long list of Indian and NRI luminaries (from the arts, politics, law, academia, activism, journalism) speaking out in ringing opposition to the continued presence of Section 377, a draconian colonial-era law that criminalizes same-sex sexual activity, in the Indian Penal Code.
The letter was drafted by Vikram Seth, and Amartya Sen has contributed a preface. The list of signatories is too long to post here, but includes inter alia Amitav Ghosh, Mira Nair, Amitava Kumar, Ramachandra Guha, Ruth Vanita, Shubha Mudgal, Aparna Sen, Arjun Appadurai, Urvashi Butalia, Suketu Mehta, and many more.
Human Rights Watch had a very good report back in 2002 on the use of section 377 to persecute HIV/AIDS activists and public health workers in India. For another glimpse of how the police harass gays, lesbians, transgender people, hijras, and others, I recommend T. Jayashree's documentary Many People, Many Desires, which focuses on the Bangalore-based queer rights organization Sangama.)
