galloway on asad: 'the last arab ruler'
So my little rant the other day had a lot to do with frustration at seeing George Galloway hailed as some heroic of speaker-of-truth-to-power--as they say, honey, please. Now via Moorishgirl (who liked the SkyNews appearance more than I did--while he made some valid and important critiques, the hurrah-for-hizbullah stuff pissed me off) I am reminded that he also is wont to go around praising Bashar al-Asad. For example, last fall:
Fucker. (Al-Ahram had more of the speech.)
She's right: God, we need Edward Said back, now more than ever.
"All dignified people in the world, whether Arabs or Muslims or others with dignity, are very proud of the speech made by president Bashar al-Assad a few days ago here in Damascus," he said.
"For me he is the last Arab ruler, and Syria is the last Arab country. It is the fortress of the remaining dignity of the Arabs, and that's why I'm proud to be here."
Fucker. (Al-Ahram had more of the speech.)
She's right: God, we need Edward Said back, now more than ever.

You're right - my link to him was not meant as an unqualified glorification of him. It was just amazing to see someone give it back to a Murdoch newscaster in that fashion!
A happy belated birthday to you too! :)
Warmly,
Baraka
dear baraka,
i entirely understand that response--i wish there were more people willing to take on the biased media coverage like that. i just wish it wasn't galloway always getting to play the self-appointed spokesman
(and this wasn't directed at your link or anyone else in particular, it's the outcome of a looong debate with some dear friends via email and private blog....)
