queer rights issues in turkey
By the standards of the Middle East (and the Islamic world) Turkey is fairly progressive when it comes to queer rights issues: homosexuality is legal, there's a small but lively scene (mostly gay, but also lesbian and trans) in the major cities, and political organizations defending queer rights exist--most notably Lambdaistanbul and KAOS GL. The latter, however, which publishes Turkey's longest-running queer magazine, has recently come under siege. The Deputy Governor of Ankara filed suit to ban KAOS GL under a vague provision in the civil law that forbids the founding of societies "contrary to law and morality." Human Rights Watch has a good press release; here is coverage in Turkish, and in English. Lambdaistanbul has called a march and press conference at Galatasaray this weekend to protest the attempt to shut down KAOS GL.
