a few interesting things

caught my eye in the news during the move:

The British bank Lloyds extends its Islamic banking services in the UK (providing bank account and home finance in accordance with Islamic law, which prohibits interest).

California's legislature passes a bill for equal marriage, but the Governator chickens out and declares he'll veto it. (Now who's a "girlie man"?)

the field of LGBT studies comes to the universities of China....

...and contested presidential elections to Egypt, with the unfortunate caveat that only Mubarak will be allowed to win. The Guardian's coverage of the flawed voting process quotes one man who says he is voting for Mubarak out of choice, rather than due to bribery or intimidation, and gives this reason:

"I can't take a risk at a time like this," said Mohammed Shahat Bilal, a 58-year-old welder in Alexandria. "We don't want what happened in Iraq to happen here. We want a stable country."
Tell me again about how invading Iraq was going to provide a shining example of stable democracy that would bring an unstoppable wave of political liberalization to the Middle East?

It's nice to see that Lloyd's is giving this a try. On the other hand, some of those rules do sure sound like essentially interest in another form to this untrained eye.

Anyway, welcome back. I always like your pictures, and I get to hear about all sorts of literature here that I never get around to reading myself.
