a great photo! i desperately wanted to get into myanmar when i was living in thailand, but it was quite illegal to go there at the time.

what was it like there?

dear all, thank you so much--especially coming from a group containing several very talented photographers!

jean, 'satisfying' is an especially interesting choice; not one I'd have picked, for reasons to do with what lies behind those walls. But I like that the image, decontextualized, speaks of different things.

ganesh: oh, where to start, when there are so many answers to that question? i spent about a month in Burma several summers ago, traveling with a (UW) professor who is specialist on Burmese politics, and with some of her friends who work with development NGOs there. It was a rich, illuminating, and sometimes profoundly depressing encounter--I've been thinking lately that I should try to write more about it, and the recent arrival of a box with some old photos and journals may prompt me to do just that.
