out of place: the movie
Wednesday, October 11 School of International and Public Affairs and First Run/Icarus Films
Film screening: Out of Place-- Memories of Edward Said
Borrowing its title from the author's 2000 memoir, “Out Of Place” traces the life and work of Edward Said (1935-2003), the Palestinian-born intellectual who wrote widely on history, literature, music, philosophy and politics. Filmed in Palestine, Israel, Lebanon, Egypt, and the U.S. This feature-length documentary traces Said's
childhood influences and celebrates his intellectual legacy, especially the importance of his work in literary criticism and postcolonial studies, his love of music, his role on the Palestinian National Council and his troubled relationship with Yasir Arafat.
6:30 pm to 9:30 pm, Anthology Film Archives, 32 Second Ave. (@ Second Street)
I've read Out of Place four or five times, though at least once was for class (not a Middle Eastern studies course, but rather a graduate historiography seminar on historical narratives and source material.) Two beloved fragments, from memory--
the first line of the book: "All families invent their parents and children, give each of them a story, character, fate, and even a language. There was always something wrong with the way I was invented...."
and from some acutely recalled meditation mid-text: "I occasionally experience myself as a cluster of flowing currents. I prefer this to the idea of a solid self."

Let's go see it!
Of course, the moment I check my schedule for next Wednesday, I'll discover that I'm irrevocably committed to something else.
But if not, let's make it happen.
it's also playing thursday and sunday, i think....
Ah, so we can organize something then. Wednesday might still be best. Are you pretty flexible?
Edward Said means a lot to me.
Both times I ran into him (noble bearing, smartly dressed, faraway look in his eyes), I wasn't bold enough to say anything.
But his multiplicity of interests, and his gift of enthusiasm, have shown me a way. I read a chapter of "Out of Place" when it first came out in Granta.
Just realised thursday will not work, as i am in DC for meetings (on how to stop some bad people from violating other people's rights) all day. Weds is still fine.
...I never had the chance to see Said in person, I'm sad to say. But every single person I know who has mentions his dapper sense of style. I'd have been at a loss for words, too.
Sepoy, have fun! ask smart and high-voltage questions; he's best when responding to such, and he cites he sources as he goes. hurray for historians! also, he is quite bleakly & bitterly funny. i've got a post percolating about his role as the successor to Said in some public spheres. But he's more the scrappy tough than the elegant aesthete.
sorry sepoy, hadn't somehow computed that you'd both been at chicago at the same time, duh. foolish me. have a nice reunion.
as for the Said comparison, I meant in the sense of the most articulate/effective spokesperson for the Palestinian perspective and cause in the US. Said's many other shoes remain sadly empty, but I think Khalidi is the best contender for this particular role. and yes, god knows someone is needed.
