Happy twenty-first to my beautiful sister Em! The photo shows my skeptical reaction to your arrival lo those many years ago, but I've come around since. May there be lots of sensible celebration this weekend, in my old haunts among the pubs of the U-District. I can't believe we're all this grown-up all of a sudden. Thank God the youngest (also an E, my parents named their three daughters with alliterative simplicity) is still only fourteen--we'll have someone to baby for a few years yet.
