an istanbul photoblog

The photo of the flag-seller on the right is one of my own, but I posted it because I've just discovered the photoblog gunluk sokak maceraleri (daily street adventures) by habibe, and it's wonderful--everyday slices of İstanbul streets (some very familiar) and the people, animals, and objects that populate them. There are some photos of the recent heavy snowfall, a stunning image of the unearthly teal color the Bosphorus gets on some stormy days, and many, many more: garbage-collectors, cars at dusk, street cats, schoolboys, homeless people, vegetable stalls, policemen, beautiful women, taxi drivers. Just scroll down the page, back into autumn and summer, and watch the city unfold-- it's filling me with a terribly strong longing. Ah, İstanbul'u özlüyorum....

Here are some especially striking shots: a boy with one of those awful pistol-shaped cigarette lighters. Haydarpaşa train station from the Kadıköy ferry dock. A classic Turkish gesture. A schoolgirl with hair as unruly as my own. A man with onions and potatoes. Swimmers diving into the water at Ortaköy. I have to stop now or I'll just link to them all.

baraka--isn't it astonishing? in the summer it can go a deep cerulean color, and other days it looks like hammered silver from shore to shore.

S-dear, what are you doing awake so very late, canim? yes, this reminds me that one of these days i should post the story of the adventures of Beyaz Peynir, who is now living the high-life and growing fat in Massachusetts.

damn, i've gotten no work done at all this afternoon because of that photoblog.

Oh - photographs are just too emotionally involving. I can waste an entire day flipping through old prints, reminiscing, pontificating and generally upsetting myself. Online editions just make the process more immediate. Photoblogs should be banned. Or elevated. You decide.
