happy thanksgiving
To all the readers who celebrate it, I hope you've had a lovely and gluttonous day (and to the Canadians, that y'all enjoyed yourselves a couple of weeks back). Thanksgiving is usually one of my favourite holidays, but this one has been even odder than all the various Thanksgivings-in-exile, as I've spent the whole day travelling. I am now on a ferryboat bound westwards out of Seattle harbour (there's free wireless on the ferries! My god I love this city) to the island where my mother and sisters are waiting for me. The day started at dawn in Brooklyn and has proceeded mostly at around 35,000 ft, with a brief interlude in the Twin Cities airport. We're holding a Thanksgiving (observed) tomorrow, so I can get in on the kitchen action. It's been a weird and wonderful holiday though, nonetheless--full of the kindness of strangers, and an unexpected sense of welcome. And here I am back on this familiar boat, coming home.

I don't always want to depend on the kindness of strangers. hmmm... this is why humanitarian intervention is so unreliable and people need states that are both effective and humane.
