earthquake
I just found out about the terrible quake in Pakistan, India, and Afghanistan. Kashmir and the NWFP seem to have been the hardest hit, and casualties are in the low thousands at the least.
If you can afford to make a donation, please go to ICRC, Care, Oxfam etc.
Hurricanes and tornadoes and cyclones are distant disasters to me, but earthquakes I know. In school, growing-up, we had earthquake drills nearly as often as fire drills--crouching under our desks while the alarm bells rang. I've lived though several quakes--though not yet the oft-predicated "Big One"--and most of my family are scattered round the Pacific Rim faults. (A great grandmother very nearly died in the 1906 SF quake). And Turkey too is a site of frequently devastating quakes, though I haven't yet been through one here. Still, they're real, and frightening, to me in a way that most other disasters and doomsday scenarios are not.
