the women of pakistan
Oh, and since we're on the subject of kickass feminist activists....
Pervez Musharraf, the dickhead general (and insensitive jerk) who currently governs Pakistan, was met with protests by South Asian- American and Canadian feminist activists on his recent tour of North America, due to his appalling remarks about several recent high-profile rape cases. He reportedly responded by saying that such protests should be held within Pakistan, not outside of it. The BBC reports that yesterday several hundred Pakistani women obliged, holding a large demonstration in Islamabad to denounce his behavior and demand an apology--and point out that it is his response, not anti-rape activism, that is damaging Pakistan's reputation abroad.
I'm reminded of a line from Rushdie's Shame-- "It is commonly and, I believe, accurately said of Pakistan that her women are much more impressive than her men." (for my dear S., of course, who read it to me first.)
